Pro: Appealing To Future Free Agents

The New York Knicks have been unsuccessful in their near 16 years of attempting to build a contender through free agency. The difference between then and now, however, is that the Knicks had no long-term assets to build around via the acquisition of free agents.

If the Knicks were to establish that they’re ready to win with a limited roster, then star-caliber free agents would be far more inclined to come to New York.

If trading for Kemba Walker isn’t your cup of tea, then signing a big-name free agent may be. The Knicks already have an outstanding selling point in first-time All-Star Kristaps Porzingis, who’s establishing himself as one of the best two-way players in the NBA.

If the Knicks were to win at a postseason-caliber level the rest of the way in 2017-18, they could prove that there’s more to this team than just the All-Star.

Tim Hardaway Jr. was a universally panned signing, but he’s proven to be worth the first year of his contract. Frank Ntilikina was a widely ridiculed draft selection, but he’s emerging as an outstanding on-ball defender at just 19 years of age.

If the Knicks manage to play at a high enough level as a team, the notion of empty numbers would be disputed and a new reputation would be achieved.
