Willy Hernangomez

Willy Hernangomez has spent the better part of the 2017-18 NBA regular season riding the pine. Due to Enes Kanter’s emergence as the starter and Kyle O’Quinn’s fit as the defensive-minded backup, Hernangomez has fallen out of the rotation.

While that may lead to the belief that executives around the NBA have forgotten about Hernangomez, that’s far from the case.

Hernangomez, 23, is currently in the second season of a four-year deal worth just under $5.9 million. That combination of youth, upside, and affordability has inevitably appealed to rival general managers who are looking for a promising young talent to develop at center.

According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News, Hernangomez has received more trade interest than any of the other centers on the roster.

"Hernangomez has received the most attention of New York’s centers from potential trade partners, according to sources. One team to show interest is the Utah Jazz."

In an era that’s quietly being overrun with modernized versions of traditionally skilled big men, it’s far from surprising to learn that Hernangomez is garnering trade interest.

Hernangomez finished his rookie season with averages of 8.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.4 offensive boards, and 1.4 assists in just 18.4 minutes per game. He rebounded at an elite level, displayed an advanced post game, and created for his teammates with his exceptional passing ability.

As a promising young center with a well-rounded skill set and a team-friendly contract, it stands to reason that Hernangomez could command a first-round draft pick if he were to be traded.
