The X-Factor: The Guards of the Future

The last time the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers played, Tim Hardaway Jr. was absent and Frank Ntilikina was in his finest form. The latter was an encouraging sign, but the former adds a new element to this rematch.

If the Knicks are hoping to go on the road and defeat the Lakers, then both Hardaway and Ntilikina will need to be at the top of their respective games.

Ntilikina was stellar during the first meeting, posting 13 points, five rebounds, five assists, two offensive boards, and a steal. He buried three shots from beyond the arc, and thoroughly outplayed Lonzo Ball during the fourth quarter.

With Ball likely to be out for revenge, Ntilikina will need to be prepared for one of the most challenging performances of his career thus far.

As for Hardaway, he’ll be trusted to provide reliable firepower from beyond the three-point line. Los Angeles has proven capable of shooting against and over New York’s defense, and which means Hardaway will need to both shoot and defend at an efficient level.

If Hardaway and Ntilikina fill their roles, New York may be able to do enough to alleviate pressure from Kristaps Porzingis during a critical road game.
