If the New York Knicks are in the market for a small forward, then they’ll likely turn their attention to a player with long-term potential. That could direct Scott Perry’s attention to his former organization, as the Detroit Pistons are reportedly attempting to shop their 2015 first-round draft pick.
According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, rival executives are under the impression that the Pistons are willing to trade Stanley Johnson.
"Forward Stanley Johnson is one name that has come up in the Pistons’ conversations with other teams, per ESPN sources. Opposing teams have come away with the impression that Johnson is available for the right return."
This is a possibility that the Knicks may be willing to look into, albeit with a rational hesitation based on what’s transpired.
Johnson was selected at No. 8 overall in the 2015 NBA Draft—four spots after current Knicks star Kristaps Porzingis. He was linked to New York during the pre-draft process, but the franchise ultimately decided to go with Porzingis.
Johnson showed flashes of defensive potential during his rookie season, but his lack of development on offense has made him a polarizing figure.
Johnson’s field goal and three-point field goal percentages have declined in every season he’s played. His defensive potential is clear and evident, but his inconsistency on offense has resulted in his still averaging fewer than 30 minutes per game.
It’s unclear if the Knicks will have interest in acquiring Johnson from the Pistons, but it’s an intriguing option that the organization must look into.
