5. Embracing The Youth Movement

The New York Knicks are beginning to show signs of a stronger commitment to the long-term rebuild than ever before. After months of anticipation, the Knicks pulled the trigger on a move that will add a second infusion of youth to the point guard position.

That process began when Keith Pompey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the Knicks have parted ways with veteran point guard Ramon Sessions.

Sessions was a consummate professional, but at 31 years of age, he doesn’t quite fit the timeline that New York is building along. When 34-year-old point guard Jarrett Jack replaced Sessions in the starting lineup, even his presence as a veteran leader became somewhat expendable.

Rather than waiving Sessions and finding a veteran at another position, the Knicks are giving 25-year-old point guard Trey Burke a chance to replace him.

For as well as Jack has played this season, Jeff Hornacek now has a chance to develop the point guard position with young and promising talent. Frank Ntilikina is 19 years of age, Burke is 25, and hybrid guard Ron Baker is 24.

If that trio plays well enough to become the featured point guard rotation, the Knicks could receive a look at what the future of the organization looks like.
