Willy Hernangomez Garnering Trade Interest

It was recently reported that the New York Knicks still view Willy Hernangomez as one of the core members of the organization. It was an encouraging report that gave fans a loose sense of comfort with the trade deadline roughly one month away.

According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, that vote of confidence hasn’t prevented rival executives from expressing interest in acquiring Hernangomez.

"As the February 8 trade deadline approaches, several teams are interested in Knicks center Willy Hernangomez, per ESPN sources."

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the Knicks will trade Hernangomez, but rival executives appear to be prepared to test their commitment to the 23-year-old center.

Hernangomez put forth an excellent rookie campaign in 2016-17. He earned All-Rookie First Team honors with averages of 8.2 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.4 offensive boards, and 1.3 assists in just 18.4 minutes per game.

Beyond the numbers, Hernangomez won fans over with his tremendous motor, his advanced post play, and his relentless work on the offensive glass.

Unfortunately, Hernangomez has been stuck behind Enes Kanter and Kyle O’Quinn on the depth chart in 2017-18. Thus, while New York may view him as a key to the long-term vision, his place in the current rotation has many around the NBA questioning how firm the commitment truly is.

It’s unclear if the Knicks are willing to trade Hernangomez, but rival general managers and team presidents have made it clear that he has suitors.
