The New York Knicks are close to signing Trey Burke. In order to do so, the Knicks will need to cut or trade a player. What might the latest rumors tell us?

The New York Knicks are in the midst of a negotiation process that could alter the landscape of the organization. In addition to signing a dynamic young talent with long-term potential, the Knicks may execute a trade in order to clear space for his arrival.

It’s possible that New York will cut a player in order to open a roster spot, but the possibility of a trade beckons an obvious question: Who might be dealt?

New York is closing in on the midway point of the 2017-18 NBA regular season. At 19-21 through 40 games, it’s in the postseason discussion, but is also at a crossroads created by the realistic possibility of ending up in the draft lottery.

According to Shams Charania of Yahoo Sports, New York is closing in on a deal with Westchester Knicks standout Trey Burke.

Signing Burke is a highly anticipated move, but with 15 active players on the main roster, New York would need to get out from under at least one contract.

The NBA will host the G League Showcase on Wednesday, Jan. 10, where players in the developmental league will audition for a spot on a main roster. Facing the threat of losing Burke to another franchise, the Knicks are pushing to sign the 25-year-old.

Due to the fact that the New York Knicks must part ways with at least one player to create space for Burke, however, one can’t help but look to the rumor mill.

After months of speculation, a trade could be looming.
