5. It’s All About Basketball

The 2017-18 NBA regular season is unlike any the New York Knicks have produced in almost 20 years. The past 16 seasons have produced more damaging storylines than wins, with public feuds, front office scandals, and resentful franchise players creating a steady stream of distractions.

In 2017-18, the only conversations about the Knicks have focused on what’s transpired on the court—a refreshing and desperately needed change of scenery.

In 2014-15, the Knicks’ tank job alienated fans, and Carmelo Anthony postponing knee surgery to play in the All-Star Game made it no easier to stomach. In 2015-16, head coach Derek Fisher found himself in a scandal with Matt Barnes and Gloria Govan.

In 2016-17, the dysfunction came to a head when franchise player Carmelo Anthony and team president Phil Jackson made their behind-the-scenes feud a public distraction.

In 2017-18, the Knicks have finally provided fans with a rare opportunity to focus on basketball. Gone are the trade rumors centered around franchise players, the public criticism of the go-to scorer, and the rumors that a coach had been romantically involved with the same woman as one of his players.

For the first time in what feels like an eternity, the only conversations being held about the Knicks pertain to basketball—a refreshing turn of events.
