New York Knicks power forward Kristaps Porzingis is well on his way to becoming the face of the European movement in the NBA. Giannis Antetokounmpo has a step on Porzingis in that regard, but the Knicks phenom is already one of the most popular players in the world.
In anticipation of his third season in the Association, Porzingis is releasing his signature sneaker—a release that will be limited in its nature.
Porzingis finished the 2016-17 season at No. 7 in the NBA in jersey sales. It was a confirmation of his status as one of the most recognizable names in the sport, as well as a reflection of the significant progress he’s made on the court.
In a post to his official Instagram account, Porzingis announced that he’s taking another dive into the merchandise world with a limited release of his signature sneaker at Packer Shoes in Jersey City.
If you’re a Porzingis fan or a sneaker head, this is the type of event that you should carve out time to attend.
Nick Depaula of NiceKicks.com revealed the design of Porzingis’ custom Adidas sneaker in late July. It features the Knicks’ signature color scheme, as well as two iconic symbols that honor the 22-year-old’s native country of Latvia and his current home of New York City.
The sole of the left shoe illustrates Latvia’s Freedom Monument statue, and the sole of the right shoe features the Statue of Liberty.
Come Thursday, fans will have a unique opportunity to be one of a select few people to actually own Porzingis’ first signature sneaker.
Porzingis’ profile is positively influenced by his presence in the New York media market. Beyond the hype train, the Latvian phenom became the first player in NBA history to average at least 18.0 points, 2.0 blocks, and 1.5 three-point field goals made per game.
The hope in New York is that he can take another step towards achieving elite status during his first season as the No. 1 scoring option.
