New York Knicks: 5 players Damyean Dotson should study
2. Klay Thompson
As far as 3-and-D players are concerned, no one in the modern era is quite as prolific as Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson. A legendary three-point shooter and masking defender who covers up for Stephen Curry’s few flaws, Thompson has achieved genuine stardom.
If Damyean Dotson wants to find his place in the modern NBA, then Thompson is the ultimate example of a player whom he should study.
Thompson’s shooting form is like an Allan Houston carbon copy, which is the ultimate praise. He’s flawless in his fundamentals, which is why he was able to score 60 points in 29 minutes—all while holding the ball for just 90 seconds.
Dotson doesn’t need to score 60 points to be an effective NBA player, but his shooting touch is almost as prolific as Thompson’s—and that makes the Warriors’ sharpshooter an ideal standard.
Defensively, Thompson has become one of the most essential pieces to the Warriors’ dominant rotation. He covers up for Curry’s deficiencies by defending the opposition’s best playmaker, no matter if they play point guard, shooting guard, or small forward.
Dotson doesn’t project to face that burden with Frank Ntilikina working alongside him, but the New York Knicks should encourage him to be able to defend all three perimeter positions.
