5. Malcolm Brogdon

While some may debate whether or not he should have won Rookie of the Year, Malcolm Brogdon gave a clinic on how a first-year player can contribute within their limitations. In the first year of his NBA career, Brogdon played multiple roles and defended at a high level.

Defense in the NBA offers the biggest learning curve, but Brogdon can show Damyean Dotson how to be a high-quality contributor from Day 1.

Brogdon displayed a unique ability to defend all three perimeter positions at a respectable level as a rookie. He wasn’t locking players down, but he understood his role, and complemented Giannis Antetokounmpo as well as just about any rookie could have on that end of the floor.

As Dotson looks to carve out a consistent role during his rookie season, the best way for him to do so is to show Jeff Hornacek that he’s ready and willing to defend.

Offensively, Brogdon is cut from a similar cloth as Dotson as a quality three-point shooter who can work off-ball or create for his teammates with the ball in his hands. He shot 40.4 percent from beyond the arc as a rookie, and averaged a surprising 4.2 assists per game.

The New York Knicks need defense, shooting, and ball movement, and like Brogdon, Dotson can provide contributions in all three of those areas from Day 1.
