The No. 1 point guard in the 2017 NBA Draft is incoming Duke Blue Devils freshman Trevon Duval. The flashy nature of his game has won over fans who scour YouTube videos, but the substance is even more impressive than the highlights.

Duval has the tools to be a star in the NBA, and head coach Mike Krzyewski is the type of experienced mind who can bring out the best of him.

Duval has a Kyrie Irving type of prototypical build at 6’3″ and 195 pounds with a near 6’10” wingspan. He’s more of an explosive athlete than Irving, which is how he makes up for his currently lackluster jump shot.

With a powerful frame, an outstanding first step, and a special degree of body control, Duval has the potential to be a generational slasher.

The key complements to his athleticism and finishing ability are his improving court vision and defensive potential. There’s no guaranteeing that he’ll commit to defense, but the potential exists for consistent All-Defensive Team honors.

The New York Knicks don’t necessarily need a point guard, but if Duval is on the board, it will be difficult to pass up the opportunity to pair him with Frank Ntilikina.
