Con: Three-Point Shooting

In the modern NBA, guards who struggle to convert the three-point shot are often labeled as liabilities. There are always ways to overcome the absence of a consistent jumper, but in this era, it’s far more difficult to forgive such a flaw than in the past.

Archie Goodwin has admittedly worked to improve his jump shot, but he’s still on the wrong side of efficiency as far as the three-ball is concerned.

Goodwin boasts career averages of 0.3 three-point field goals made per game and 0.7 three-point field goals made per 36 minutes. That looks even worse when one realizes he’s shot just 23.6 percent from beyond the arc through four NBA seasons.

Goodwin has more than enough time to work on his jump shot—he’s turned 23 years of age on August 17—but there’s no guaranteeing that he’ll ever become a reliable three-point shooter.

Goodwin made progress by shooting 33.3 percent from distance in 2016-17, but the sample size was a mere 15 games. Intriguing as that may be, he shot just 23.5 percent from three-point range during his 34 appearances in the newly branded G League in 2016-17.

There are few who question whether or not Goodwin can score, but if he’s going to spend a significant chunk of time off-ball, then his lackluster jump shot would hurt the New York Knicks.
