5. Untapped Potential

One of the primary reasons to be intrigued by Jamel Artis is how easy it is to see his next step towards success. For as physically imposing as he may be, Artis still has the potential to slim down and become a more agile player.

Considering he scored at a borderline elite level with extra mass on his frame, it stands to reason that an NBA-caliber training regimen would elevate his game to a new level.

It’s rare that 24-year-old rookies are viewed as players with untapped potential, but that’s the case here. How much better Artis can become is debatable, but there’s no way around how much more effective he can be with a more toned frame.

Artis will now compete for a contract that, if he secures it, would enable him to become a focal point of the Knicks’ G League staff.

For as compelling as his upside is as a scorer, the most intriguing aspect of his untapped potential can be found on defense. He has the size and strength to be a high-level defensive player, but was spread thin with his extensive offensive role in college.

With a more defined role in the NBA, Artis could potentially develop into the type of two-way player whom New York has been looking for along the wings.
