Archie Goodwin has shown flashes of potential during his brief NBA career, but he’s been unable to make anything stick. He was lost in the shuffle of an incomparably deep Phoenix Suns backcourt, and has been unable to maintain a stable job ever since.
Goodwin is familiar with New York Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek, however, and could be an excellent addition on a two-way contract.
Despite being a four-year NBA veteran, Goodwin will be just 23 years of age at the beginning of the 2017-18 season. Thus, splitting time between the G League and the main roster shouldn’t be much of a slight to his ego.
Goodwin has all of the talent to break through and earn a full-time role, but he’ll need to justify the hype on the court before that transpires.
Goodwin has an inconsistent outside shot, but he’s an athletic slasher who can fill a role that New York has yet to address. He boasts career averages of 15.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.0 steals per 36 minutes, and has shot 48.4 percent on 2-point field goals.
This wouldn’t be a guaranteed win of a signing, but Goodwin has as much promise and potential as any remaining free agent.
Note: Goodwin appeared in 15 NBA regular season games during the 2016-17 season.
