4. Fixing The Damaged Reputation

Fans may be conflicted in their thoughts about Carmelo Anthony, but the players around the NBA love him. Between his activism, his leadership with Team USA, and his uncanny scoring ability, Anthony has won the respect of his peers.

After former team president Phil Jackson spent three years alienating his franchise player, it may benefit the Knicks to reintroduce Anthony to a healthy environment.

Convincing Anthony to stay will be difficult, primarily due to the fact that New York won’t be competing for a championship in 2017-18. If it manages to show him the benefits of spending one more season with the Knicks, however, the gamble could pay dividends.

New York is in need of serious damage control as far as appealing to players around the NBA is concerned, and a content Anthony in 2017-18 could achieve that.

This would depend entirely on Anthony wanting to play for the Knicks during the 2017-18 campaign. Keeping him against his will would be a disastrous, irresponsible, and downright disrespectful decision to make.

If Anthony commits to getting the Knicks back to the playoffs in a depleted Eastern Conference, however, the benefits would be undeniable.
