Trade Proposal No. 4: Going All-In

If it comes to this, then the New York Knicks will need to look long and hard at how far they believe Kyrie Irving can take them. A dynamic duo of Irving and Kristaps Porzingis could be the foundation for sustainable success, and that may be worth betting the farm for.

Going all-in on a trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers would mean giving up quite a bit and accepting a contract that could be detrimental in the long-term.

Some may question why Cleveland would give up Kevin Love, but trading for Carmelo Anthony would render him obsolete. LeBron James will be 33 years of age, meaning he likely can’t defend point guards, and either he or Anthony would play power forward.

If that proves to be the case, then Love’s absence of defensive value would make it near impossible to play him—a reality that won’t be accepted at upwards of $20 million per season.

As for New York, this trade scenario would call for giving up two of the four young core pieces: Willy Hernangomez and Frank Ntilikina. That may be unappealing, but both players are aspiring to become what Irving already is at 25 years of age: a bonafide star.

This trade would give Cleveland youth, All-Star potential, and an elite clutch scorer in Anthony. New York would get a potential franchise player and a high-risk, high-reward star.

Kristaps Porzingis and Love may just be able to make it work down low.
