Trade Proposal No. 2: Testing The Asking Price

The New York Knicks can offer a base package of Carmelo Anthony, Kyle O’Quinn, and a 2018 first-round draft pick. In order to persuade the Cleveland Cavaliers to trade Kyrie Irving, however, a 2020 first-round draft pick will likely need to be added.

The Knicks have worked hard to rid themselves of the pick-trading ways of yesteryear, but it would be worth it for a 25-year-old who’s already a perennial All-Star.

When New York has traded its draft picks in the past, it’s generally been for aging veterans and a part of bigger packages. For example: The Knicks not only traded two first-round draft picks for Anthony, but gave up Wilson Chandler, Raymond Felton, Danilo Gallinari, and Timofey Mozgov.

In other words: New York traded its entire young core and two first-round draft picks for two players—and Chauncey Billups was amnestied after his first season in New York.

By adding Chasson Randle and the second pick to this trade package, the Knicks would be offering pieces to help in both the short and long-term. Randle can be a Mario Chalmers or Norris Cole type of contributor for LeBron James’ crew, and O’Quinn can create depth down low.

If nothing else, this trade could gauge the interest that Cleveland actually has in dealing Irving—and just how much it’s going to cost.

If Cleveland were to accept this proposal, New York would have a 25-and-under core of Tim Hardaway Jr., Willy Hernangomez, Kyrie Irving, Frank Ntilikina, and Kristaps Porzingis.
