5. New York Style And Ties

New York Knicks fans have an extensive history of valuing players with local ties. From Mark Jackson to Anthony Mason, Knicks fans open their arms and welcome players with ties to the beautiful city of New York.

New Jersey may not be New York, but it’s close enough that Kyrie Irving would be accepted by the Knicks as something of a local hero.

Irving was born in Australia, but he played high school basketball in Montclair and Elizabeth, New Jersey. His play at St. Patrick propelled him to the top of recruiting boards around the country, and made him a nationally recognized star.

More applicably: It made him one of the most popular players in the New York-New Jersey area, which inevitably creates clout with Knicks fans.

Furthermore, Irving plays a style that would make New York City basketball fans proud. He’s flashy with his handles, prolific on the drive, and in possession of a tremendous jump shot—all of the traits that bring Madison Square Garden to life.

With local connections and a New York City style of play, Irving would be welcome as somewhere in between a hometown hero and a sight to behold.
