The New York Knicks reportedly met with Sacramento Kings VP Scott Perry to discuss the parameters of a deal that would make him New York’s general manager.

The New York Knicks are inching closer to giving Steve Mills the title of president of basketball operations. Mills’ tenure as general manager predated recently relieved team president Phil Jackson, and he could now step into The Zen Master’s former role.

With Mills the rumored favorite to take over as president of basketball operations, New York is looking to the Western Conference for a new general manager.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski and Ian Begley of ESPN, the Knicks met with Sacramento Kings vice president Scott Perry about the opening at general manager.

Perry has nearly 20 years of experience in NBA front offices, including his time with the 2004 NBA champion Detroit Pistons, and his role in selecting Kevin Durant for the Seattle SuperSonics.

The Knicks attempted to hire former Cleveland Cavaliers general manager David Griffin to fill the same position. Unfortunately, New York refused to meet Griffin’s demand of being able to bring in his own staff.

Owner James Dolan will attempt to have better luck with Perry, who is said to view the Knicks opening as a dream job.

The question is: Will a hiring be made this time around?

Despite having an incomplete front office, New York has already shelled out roughly $80 million in free agency. It re-signed Ron Baker to a two-year deal worth $8.9 million, and signed Tim Hardaway Jr. to a four-year contract worth $71 million.

The hope appears to be that Perry can pick up where the Knicks are leaving off as far as roster construction and a vision are concerned.

Recent history implies that he can help.

The general consensus is that Perry helped Sacramento ace the offseason with the selections of De’Aaron Fox, Harry Giles, Justin Jackson, and Frank Mason III at the 2017 NBA Draft. The Kings also signed respected veterans in Vince Carter, George Hill, and Zach Randolph.

Between 2013 and 2015, Perry also played a significant role in the Orlando Magic drafting the likes of Victor Oladipo, Elfrid Payton, and Aaron Gordon.

If Scott Perry can help the New York Knicks surround the blooming young core with veteran talent and future draft picks, he’ll be a welcomed hire.
