The Boston Celtics reportedly reached out to the New York Knicks about a potential Marcus Smart trade. What would the pros and cons of such a deal be?

The New York Knicks are in pursuit of a point guard to place alongside incoming rookie Frank Ntilikina. It’s been a relatively underwhelming chase thus far, as New York has played it safe with a vast majority of the free agent point guards.

With only a select few options remaining on the open market, it appears as though the Knicks have been gifted the luxury of an alternative option.

New York has been in contact with the likes of George Hill, Jrue Holiday, Shelvin Mack, Rajon Rondo, and Jeff Teague in free agency. With a well-documented interest in an established point guard, however, teams are beginning to take notice of the chance for a trade.

According to Ian Begley of ESPN New York, the Boston Celtics have reached out to the Knicks with a trade offer of point guard Marcus Smart.

It’s far from imminent, but the Celtics and Knicks could potentially come to an agreement that sends Smart to New York.

Boston is in pursuit of cap space following its trade for All-Star swingman Gordon Hayward. Smart is due a relatively small figure in 2017-18, but he’ll be a restricted free agent who could command a hefty salary as soon as next summer.

The question is: What would the pros and cons be if the New York Knicks managed to execute a trade with the Boston Celtics for Marcus Smart?
