Con: Working On Different Timelines

This is more of a concern than a reason to shy away, but it’s fair to state that Jeff Teague doesn’t fit the timeline of the core players. Kristaps Porzingis is 21 years of age, Frank Ntilikina is 18, and Willy Hernangomez is 23.

There’s a positive spin to put on that, but on a costly four-year contract, Teague’s differing timeline may be a reason to shy away.

The positive spin here is that Teague could help Carmelo Anthony return the Knicks to the playoffs. In turn, the likes of Porzingis, Ntilikina, Hernangomez, and Damyean Dotson could receive valuable exposure and prepare to face higher expectations.

In that scenario, the core players could grow into the responsibility of leading the team when Teague and Carmelo Anthony are past their prime, but still valuable.

The downside here, however, is that Teague would be 30 years of age as soon as his second season with the Knicks. A player whose game is predicated on his speed and quickness, Teague could be a risky long-term investment.

Teague could help the Knicks win sooner than later, but it’s fair to question if a long-term contract for a player who doesn’t fit the core’s timeline is the right idea.
