Analysis
The New York Knicks have signed former Vanderbilt Commodores star Luke Kornet to a two-way contract. The deal will enable Kornet to play for both the New York and Westchester Knicks, with the latter being his more likely early location.
For those unfamiliar with why the Knicks would take a chance on Kornet, he’s the embodiment of 3-and-D—just with a 7’0″ twist.
Kornet holds the all-time record for the most 3-point field goals made by a Division I player who stands at 7’0″ or taller. He’s also a prolific shot-blocker who may not be elite on defense, but can positively impact the game around the rim.
Kornet only pulled down 7.9 rebounds per 40 minutes in 2016-17, but it’s worth noting that he averaged 10.6 rebounds per 40 minutes as recently as 2015-16.
Kornet will need to improve the efficiency with which he shoots, but he made 120 3-point field goals over the course of four seasons, including 53 in 2016-17. He also accumulated an average of 2.7 blocks per 40 minutes during those four years.
A skilled passer with a 7’0″ frame, Kornet could provide a sense of continuity when Kristaps Porzingis comes off the floor.
