With Frank Ntilikina being drafted at No. 8 overall, the New York Knicks will need to choose wisely at the other guard spot. Ntilikina has elite size, improving court vision, and a solid outside shot, but he’s also been criticized for being an average athlete.
With Ntilikina more of a floor-spacer and facilitator, the Knicks select an explosive complement with tremendous size: Edmond Sumner.
Standing at 6’6″ with a 6’9″ wingspan, Sumner can defend both guard spots at a high level. The torn ACL he suffered in January creates reason for trepidation, but Sumner was a borderline lottery pick at the time of the injury.
With a strong work ethic, an elite physical profile, and a valuable combination of court vision and defensive potential, Sumner would be the perfect addition.
If he checks out medically, Sumner could alleviate pressure from Ntilikina on both ends of the floor. While Ntilkina would space the floor with his 3-point shooting, Sumner could be the player who drives the lane and exposes defenses on the drive.
With Ntilikina and Sumner in the backcourt together, the Knicks would have two big bodies who provide the perfect balance between shooting, slashing, and distributing.
