Harry Giles suffered multiple severe knee injuries during his otherwise legendary high school career. Nevertheless, he was heralded as the No. 1 overall recruit in the class of 2016 by multiple respected outlets, scouts, and analysts.
The Brooklyn Nets would be taking a significant chance at No. 27 overall in the 2017 NBA Draft, but Giles has superstar potential that’s worth gambling on.
From the brief glimpses of exposure, Giles looked the part of an outstanding rebounder and imposing shot-blocker. He stands at just under 6’11” with a 7’3″ wingspan, and while he may have lost a step athletically, he still has some measure of explosiveness.
Giles still runs the floor well, and as he learns more about how to properly fill the lane, he should minimize the physical risk of doing so.
The truth about what makes Giles special is that he already has a strong foundation from a fundamental perspective. He’s a skilled passer, has shown flashes of being a star in the low post, and is developing enough range to expand his game.
The New York Knicks don’t have a need for Giles, but he’s a player they may have to account for over the course of the next decade plus.
