Defensive Potential
Jaron Blossomgame, like many players on the collegiate level, struggled to remain focused on the defensive end of the floor. That may be troubling, but the tools are in place for the Clemson Tigers star to develop into a plus defender in the NBA.
The New York Knicks have a solid perimeter defender in Lance Thomas, but Blossomgame could be the athletic evolution of him.
Blossomgame has the physical tools to develop into a lockdown defender against wings and smaller 4s. He has the size, strength, and length to keep slashers in front of him, and can close out with a wide enough base to both contest shots and prevent driving opportunities.
Although it’s not guaranteed to translate to the next level, it’s worth noting that Blossomgame held opponents to 0.66 points per play in isolation in 2016-17.
If head coach Jeff Hornacek can convince Blossomgame to embrace the role of a defensive ace, the Knicks could make a splash here. He can alleviate pressure from the defensive interior, as well as the perimeter players who may struggle against their assignments.
There are no shortage of voids for the Knicks to fill, but there’s no need more pressing than that of an improved defensive perimeter.
