New York Knicks center Marshall Plumlee has been commissioned as a second lieutenant in the New York National Guard.

For as passionate as New York Knicks fans may be, it’s important to remember that some things are bigger than basketball. Even the most frustrating of players are still human beings, and even the most unheralded of contributors can be heroes.

Knicks center Marshall Plumlee offered a powerful reminder of that very truth with a recent announcement via his official Instagram account.

Plumlee went undrafted in 2016, but has since gone on to impress coaches around the NBA. He signed a three-year deal with the Knicks and earned the respect of those around him both in New York and Westchester.

Plumlee recently earned an entirely new level of respect from the masses by being commissioned as a second lieutenant in the New York National Guard.

Plumlee is a selfless individual who deserves every ounce of respect that one can possibly offer.

Plumlee played four seasons for legendary head coach Mike Krzyzewski and the Duke Blue Devils. He helped Duke win the national championship in 2014-15, and earned a featured role as a nightly double-double threat in 2015-16.

Between his time with the Blue Devils and the NBA Draft process, Plumlee made his intentions to be a part of the U.S. military perfectly clear.

Plumlee has now realized that dream with the incredible honor of being named second lieutenant for the New York National Guard.

Assuming the Knicks pick up Plumlee’s non-guaranteed salary of $1,312,611 for 2017-18, he projects to be available to return to the team. He’s voiced his desire to be a leader both in basketball and in the military, and he’s made strides towards both goals coming to fruition.

There are polarizing individuals in professional sports, but Plumlee is the type of person whom one can’t help but respect.
