The Utah Jazz clearly need a point guard who can contribute in the long-term. George Hill may re-sign this coming summer, but he’s already 31 years of age and Dante Exum is rapidly approaching draft bust status.
If the Jazz are looking for a point guard who can space the floor, facilitate the offense, and compete on defense, then Jawun Evans could be the ideal target.
Evans is undersized, but his near 6’6″ wingspan and dynamic playmaking ability cancel that out. He’s proven more than capable of creating for his teammates, as evidenced by his 6.4 assists per game and 2.27 assist-to-turnover ratio in 2016-17.
That invaluable ability to facilitate the offense would not only alleviate pressure from Hill, but transform the Jazz’s offense in its entirety.
Defensively, Evans’ length enabled him to rack up steals in 2016-17 and could enable the same success in Utah. He’s also a capable 3-point shooter who could continue to space the floor in Quin Snyder’s under-appreciated offense.
Evans has intriguing upside and immediate value, and the Jazz can only benefit from taking a chance on a point guard at No. 24.
The New York Knicks should be eyeing Evans if a second first-round draft pick is going to be acquired.
