4. Westchester Shuts Down The Maine Red Claws In First Meeting
On January 10, 2017, the Westchester Knicks had a 10-10 record. The team lost five of its previous six games and were in the midst of a 3-game losing streak. At that point, it was almost the half way point of the season. The Knicks were coming off a 28-point loss to the Delaware 87ers. The Knicks’ defense stepped up in a big way in the first half, as they allowed 36 points in the half. It didn’t get much better for the Red Claws in the second half. The Knicks maintained their defensive intensity throughout the game. The 78 points the Red Claws scored was the fewest points they scored in a game during the 2016-17 season (including playoffs).
Not only did the Knicks have their best defensive game of the season, but the team had a well-balanced offensive game. Not only did seven Knick players finish in double figures with four coming from the bench, but Westchester’s bench outscored Maine 52-21. Kevin Capers lead all bench performers with 14 points. Doron Lamb recorded 13 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-10 from the field. Jaylen Bond totaled 12 points while Von Wafer added 11 points.
Westchester benefited from their two assignment players. Maurice Ndour lead the team with 17 points, along with seven rebounds and two steals in 29 minutes. Marshall Plumlee was a huge presence on the glass. Plumlee finished the game with seven points and 13 rebounds in 31 minutes.
