5. Starting The Season On The Right Note
Coming off their first-ever playoff berth, the Westchester Knicks were looking to build momentum in the early stages of the 2016-17 season. Just like the 2015-16 season, the Knicks went on an early winning streak, which helped them build momentum for the season. Following a 13-point loss to the Delaware 87ers, the Dub Knicks picked up a road win against the Greensboro Swarm.
After starting the season on the road, the Westchester Knicks welcomed the Swarm into the Westchester County Center for their home opener. After defeating Greensboro three days prior, the Knicks picked up a huge 22-point victory over the Swarm.
The Dub Knicks received significant production from both the team and assignment players. Marshall Plumlee finished with a team-high 22 points and eight rebounds. Ron Baker showcased his facilitating, as he finished with 15 points and seven assists. Jaylen Bond added a double-double (10 points and 10 rebounds) off the bench.
In their following game, the Knicks faced off against the Canton Charge. Westchester built a strong 14-point lead at halftime, which was huge after the Charge bounced back with a 28-point 3rd quarter. The Knicks were led by Damien Inglis’ double-double (14 points and 10 rebounds).
Chasson Randle totaled 16 points and five rebounds. Jordon Crawford added 15 points and Kevin Capers finished with 10 points off the bench.
Westchester played a great defensive first half against the Iowa Energy. The Energy totaled 36 points in the half. The Knicks had a clear lead heading into the second half. In the final quarter, the Knicks led up and gave up 45 points in the final quarter. Despite that, the Knicks held on and picked up their fourth win of the season.
The Dub Knicks were led by Damien Inglis 23 points and 14 rebounds. Chasson Randle added 23 points in the win.
The Knicks carried their momentum into the following game against the Santa Cruz Warriors. In a game of the season, the Knicks and Warriors battled to the final seconds. The two teams were tied at the half. It came down to the final 40 seconds, as Damien Inglis got a tough lay-up to go. On the defensive end, Keith Wright stopped Phil Pressey at the rim and haulted the Warriors’ opportunity at a victory.
After a 4-0 home stand, the Westchester Knicks traveled to Erie, PA to take on the BayHawks. The Knicks had a strong first half to go along with a solid defensive performance in the 2nd quarter. Their 64-point first half turned out to be crucial, as they were out scored in the 2nd half. Even with that, the Knicks walked away with their sixth win in a row.
A 6-1 start was huge for the Dub Knicks. Despite missing the playoffs, Westchester picked up their longest winning streak of the season and tied their longest winning streak in franchise history.
