New York Knicks: The Type Of Players Phil Jackson Should Target
3-Point Shooters
The New York Knicks need to adapt to the changes being made to the basic standards for offensive execution. Spacing is no longer a matter of being able to convert from midrange and sink the occasional 3-point field goal.
If the Knicks are going to thrive in the modern NBA, then they must be able to engage in a 3-point shootout if that’s the tone of a game.
Living and dying by the 3-point shot is an unhealthy way to play, but teams must be able to convert at a respectable level. New York failed to do so in 2016-17, as it ranked in the bottom 10 of the NBA in two key categories.
The Knicks ranked No. 21 in the Association in 3-point field goal percentage and tied for No. 23 in 3-point field goals made per game.
3-point shooters are out in abundance, and New York must do a better job of building a rotation including them. Specialists can be added for cheap, but what’s truly missing is a point guard who can hit the shot when he’s given space to do so.
Derrick Rose may have mastered the art of the midrange jump shot, but he converted at a rate of just 21.7 percent from beyond the arc.
