Pro: Off-Ball Offense

As previously alluded to, J.J. Redick is an outstanding shooter and a capable playmaker. Those are two exceptional strengths, but they only scratch the surface of what makes Redick such a valuable player on the offensive end of the floor.

If the New York Knicks manage to sign Redick, they’d get a player who consistently does what few even attempted to do in 2016-17: move without the ball.

Redick is like a Ray Allen or a Reggie Miller in the sense that he’s in constant motion without the ball in his hands. His willingness to run off screens gets other players involved, as his teammates must set screens and get him the ball.

After the Knicks essentially lived in isolation during the fourth quarter of games in 2016-17, having Redick would hold all others accountable.

Courtney Lee did a respectable job in this regard, as did pending free agent Justin Holiday. Redick has continued the art form of off-ball offense, however, and that’s a skill that every team would benefit from adding.

For the Knicks, acquiring Redick would mean fortifying the offense—triangle or otherwise—with a player who can get open and involve others.

The question is: should the New York Knicks make a run at J.J. Redick?
