3. Continuity

As Phil Jackson touched upon in his exit meeting with the media, the New York Knicks are attempting to achieve a measure of continuity. Some may question why after a 31-51 season, but New York has hit the reset button during three straight offseasons.

If New York can bring back most of the same second unit, then it stands to reason that the starters will have an easier time adjusting in 2017-18.

Entering the 2016-17 NBA regular season, just five of the 15 players on the roster were with the Knicks in 2015-16. That’s minimal carryover, and includes just two of the five starters and three role players with varying roles.

Sasha Vujacic was more of a locker room guy, Lance Thomas couldn’t stay healthy in 2015-16 or 2016-17, and Kyle O’Quinn’s playing time continues to fluctuate.

With 10 new players, including three new starters, a new sixth man, and a new head coach, the Knicks were facing quite the uphill battle. That played a direct role in New York falling to pieces once the level of talent proved incapable of overcoming a lack of chemistry.

By bringing players like Justin Holiday back for 2017-18, the Knicks could avoid experiencing those same chemistry issues by going through a second consecutive training camp with this core.
