New York Knicks: Don’t Blame The Triangle, Blame The Defense
The Personnel
Derrick Rose has a Defensive Real Plus-Minus of -2.68, which ranks 84th out of 89 point guards. Yes, that’s awful, but it’s not only Rose. For instance, Carmelo Anthony is at -1.49 DRPM and Courtney Lee is at -1.34 DRPM.
The common theme is that their offensive numbers are better than their defensive numbers.
On the offensive side, ‘Melo led the team with 22.5 points per game. Rose added 18.0 points per game on 47.1 percent shooting from the field.
Willy Hernangomez is one of the best young offensive centers in the NBA. He puts up 8.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while shooting 52.9 percent from the field. In April, he’s averaging 13.6 points per game.
Lastly, Lee is shooting 40.2 percent from beyond the 3-point line.
The players New York signed in the offseason to help address the defense aren’t playing average defense. The coaches aren’t putting together the right defensive schemes to help better the team.
Unfortunately, the quality offense is being outweighed by the inconsistent defense.
