The Derrick Rose Dilemma

In 2016-17, one of the central issues for the Knicks was the point guard position. New York traded for Derrick Rose in the offseason to help with the offense. However, the team didn’t know Phil Jackson would change Jeff Hornacek offense to the triangle system.

When the Knicks changed the offense to the triangle offense, Rose was a poor fit.

Rose is an explosive and dynamic penetrating point guard who draws defenders towards him every time he goes to the basket. Rose needs the ball in his hands in order to make something happen positively for the team.

The triangle required Rose to play off-ball, sit in the corner, and not be aggressive. The triangle took Rose out of position, which is why he wasn’t a fit after the second half of the season.

Even though the point guard position is the ideal pick for the Knicks, drafting a small forward may be No. 1 on the Knicks’ list.
