New York Knicks: How Much Is Derrick Rose Worth?
Contract Cost: Starter
The cost of signing a starting point guard is enough to make your knees quiver and your head pulse. That isn’t necessarily saying that players don’t deserve a high percentage of the television deal, but instead acknowledging what many ignore: the salary cap.
If the Knicks were to re-sign Rose to start at point guard, then the cost would likely be in the range of $20 million per season.
For perspective, Jeremy Lin signed a three-year deal worth $38.3 million with the Brooklyn Nets in 2016. That near $13 million per season contract is likely the bare minimum of what Rose would be willing to even consider in free agency.
The more likely scenario is that Rose would be offered a three-year deal in the $50 million to $60 million price range.
The ideal aspect of signing Rose to a contract is that it would directly coincide with a player on a rookie contract. If that were to be the case, then an ideal balance would be created and the cost of the deal would be easier to stomach.
If the Knicks opt against drafting a point guard, however, then the cost of signing a starter and backup could carry a heavy burden.
