New York Knicks: How Much Is Derrick Rose Worth?
Contract Length: Sixth Man
If the New York Knicks manage to sign Derrick Rose as a sixth man, then one can expect a short-term contract. That’s a product of both a risk versus reward debate and Rose likely wanting to prove that he can start again.
If Rose were to accept a contract as a sixth man, then it would likely be a minimum of a fully guaranteed one-year rental deal and a maximum of a three-year contract.
Rose is in a somewhat similar position to Brandon Jennings, whom the Knicks signed during the summer of 2016. Jennings, like Rose, had looked strong from a physical perspective after suffering a severe injury—albeit a far more severe injury than Rose—but struggled in key areas.
The advantage that Rose has over Jennings is that he’s coming off of a productive season, while Jennings hadn’t proven capable of producing at an ideal level.
For perspective, Jamal Crawford signed a three-year contract with a partially guaranteed final season. Crawford was 36 years of age at the time that he signed the contract, which implies that the 29-year-old Rose could land a three-year deal of his own.
Rose should have no trouble getting a two-year deal, but if he wants to prove that he deserves a long-term contract, then signing a one-year deal with the New York Knicks would be ideal.
