New York Knicks: Should Kristaps Porzingis Be The Featured Star?
Sophomore Year
Dirk Nowitzki moved up to being the No. 2 man during his sophomore year, trailing just Michael Finley as the team’s leader in playing time and scoring. Similarly, Porzingis has become No. 2, as well, right behind none other than Carmelo Anthony.
Of course, both of their scoring numbers increased with more playing time. Nowitzki’s numbers were much higher, given that the gap of responsibility between his rookie and sophomore years increased dramatically.
Nowitzki was placed in a leadership position. He was granted more minutes and more opportunities to become a star. With this, Nowitzki knew that he had to continue to develop his skills, his shot, and his perception of being more than just an ordinary role player.
As Michael Finley got older, someone had to fill his shoes.
Porzingis now faces a similar situation. Should he model the same approach his possible predecessor did? Or should he continue to play under the tutelage of Carmelo Anthony?
It’s a touchy question that’s without a clear answer. On one hand, development under a knowledgeable guide is a good thing. Anthony could continue to help Porzingis with his development as a player and possible superstar.
Porzingis will be known as a superstar in this league, even though that perception of ‘Melo may only linger for a short amount of time. Porzingis even talked to the New York Daily News about Carmelo Anthony possibly leaving the team:
"“I think it would make life harder for me on the court. He makes stuff easier for me.”"
If you’re Phil Jackson, Steve Mills, and James Dolan, and if you think this guy could quite possibly be the future of your organization, listening to this quote changes things this offseason.
A lot.
