Carmelo Anthony

From an offensive perspective, this was one of Carmelo Anthony’s worst games of the season. He scored at a respectable rate, but displayed disconcerting inefficiency that could be viewed as a flaw that set the tone for his performance.

True as that all may be, Anthony’s leadership was far more important than his offensive execution—and that began and ended on defense.

Anthony recorded 17 points and two assists on 4-of-16 shooting from the field and 2-of-7 shooting from 3-point range. He also pulled down nine rebounds, picked up two steals, and had the best +/- of any player on the Knicks.

While it may be easy to point to his poor shooting, Anthony made a positive impact on the game by setting a positive example on defense.

Anthony stepped up as a rebounder in a small-ball lineup that required him to do so. He also played respectable on-ball defense in the sense that his effort was far more concerted than in previous weeks.

If the Knicks are going to turn the season around, Anthony’s effort on the defensive end of the floor will be crucial.
