Reggie Jackson, Detroit Pistons

Position: Point Guard

Experience: 6th Season
2016-17 Slash Line: .428/.363/.850
2016-17 Season Averages: 28.4 MPG, 15.2 PPG, 5.6 APG, 2.3 RPG, 0.8 SPG, 1.4 3PM

Reggie Jackson was viewed as a borderline All-Star as recently as the 2015-16 NBA regular season. Unfortunately, the Detroit Pistons have been worse since he returned from injury in 2016-17—a concerning truth that Stan Van Gundy has publicly acknowledged.

According to Alex Kennedy of HoopsHype, the Pistons have explored the trade market for Jackson—and some around the NBA expect a deal to get done.

"Detroit has quietly explored the trade market for each of its franchise centerpieces, according to sources across the league, and come away disappointed with the potential return. Any Drummond deal at the deadline is an extreme long shot, but Jackson remains in play for Minnesota, Orlando, New Orleans, or some mystery destination."

The New York Knicks could be an interested party with both of their current point guards headed for free agency.

Brandon Jennings signed a one-year deal this past summer and Derrick Rose is on an expiring contract. Rose has made it public knowledge that he’s going to ask for a max contract and Jennings could command a significant salary, as well.

Jackson, meanwhile, is in the second season of a five-year deal worth $80 million that has him under contract through 2020 at an average of roughly $17 million per season.

That’s an affordable contract under the current salary cap.

Jackson has a polarizing personality that has garnered less than favorable reviews in both Detroit and Oklahoma City. He’s a sensational talent, however, and Phil Jackson is known to be the master of managing egos.

If head coach Jeff Hornacek is willing to take on the responsibility of coaching Jackson, then this could be a big move worth making—if New York is willing to pay a significant cost.
