The Dallas Mavericks are 11-25 and headed towards the NBA draft lottery. Dallas is traveling down the path towards finding Dirk Nowitzki’s heir apparent, but significant moves could still be made.
During a recent appearance on The Lowe Post, Kevin Arnovitz of ESPN reported that the Mavericks are listening to trade offers for Wesley Matthews.
That doesn’t necessarily guarantee that a trade will be made, but it’s an interesting turn of events.
Matthews is one of the league’s elite 3-point shooters. He’s already made 105 3-point field goals in 36 appearances in 2016-17 and has converted at least 150 in four consecutive seasons, as well as five of the past six campaigns.
By adding Matthews to the roster, they’d bolster the offense with a legitimate sharpshooter who can work off-ball and convert the 3-ball with volume and efficiency.
On the opposite end of the floor, Matthews is a high-quality defensive player. He’s lost a step because of the achilles injury he suffered in 2014-15, but Dallas’ defense is still 2.4 points better per 100 possessions when he’s on the court in 2016-17.
Matthews would be an excellent fit alongside Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, and Derrick Rose, but he’s due upwards of $36.5 million over the next two seasons.
The risk would outweigh the reward with both Rose and Brandon Jennings approaching free agency and the Knicks needing cap room.
