Derrick Rose

Derrick Rose’s performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers was one of the most encouraging showings imaginable. It wasn’t the best game of his career, but Rose’s explosiveness overwhelmed the Cavaliers’ transition and half court defenses.

Promising as that may be, it’s also vital to note that Rose had just one assist to four turnovers in 30 minutes of playing time.

Rose consistently attacked the basket, which is an encouraging reality given the injuries he’s endured. He excelled as a scorer in those situations, posting 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field with a pair of free throws made.

When the starting point guard posts just one assist to four turnovers, however, there’s reason to be encouraged and intrigued.

Rose has never been an elite facilitator, but the Knicks need him to provide consistent scoring opportunities to his teammates. Rose’s ability to create penetration remains intact, but he must be willing to kick it out to his teammates.

If not, then the Knicks will need to find a different player who can balance Rose’s score-first mentality while simultaneously making up for his defensive lapses.
