Primary Impact

The New York Knicks need to make the playoffs in 2016-17. The word, “Need,” may seem dramatic, but New York’s inconsistency over the past 15 years has resulted in an understandable sense of urgency.

Thus, as it pertains to Kristaps Porzingis, the Knicks will require him to excel in one area above all else: complementing Carmelo Anthony.

If Anthony’s shot isn’t falling, then Porzingis needs to be confident and comfortable with taking over the stretch during which ‘Melo is struggling. If Anthony’s shot is falling, then Porzingis must use the threat of his scoring ability as a way to be a decoy.

If Anthony’s man manages to get by him when the Knicks are on defense, then Porzingis needs to be there to discourage the opposition from driving the lane.

This may not seem fair, but this is the role of a No. 2 player on a championship-caliber team. They have an obvious sense of individuality, but at the end of the day, their job is to contribute in ways that perfectly complement the No. 1 star.

For Porzingis, successfully doing so would enable Anthony to lead the Knicks to the 2017 NBA Playoffs—and, potentially, on a deep postseason run.
