Primary Impact

Derrick Rose should be able to score, facilitate, and defend at solid enough levels to help the New York Knicks win. In an ideal situation, Rose will be available in at least 65 games, which would alleviate some of the pressure on Brandon Jennings.

The question is: when Rose is on the court, in which area can the Knicks realistically expect him to make the biggest impact?

Rose may not be the explosive dunk artist that he used to be, but he’s still one of the best in the NBA at creating penetration. For perspective, he ranked No. 9 in the Association in points via drives per game during the 2015-16 season.

For what it’s worth, Rose posted a better field goal percentage on drives than seven of the eight players who averaged more points via drives per game than he.

Rose’s ability to create penetration is one of the primary reasons the Knicks traded for him. The Knicks were dead last in points via drives per game in 2015-16, recording 10.4 as a team—just 3.5 more than Rose had individually.

Considering Rose is still attacking the basket with consistency and efficiency, it’s realistic to expect him to continue doing so in 2016-17.
