New York Knicks: Realistic Expectations For Derrick Rose In 2016-17
Facilitating
Though one would expect Derrick Rose to regress as a scorer after enduring the injuries he’s faced, his sharpest decline has been as a facilitator. He averaged just 4.7 assists per game in 2015-16 and dished out 4.9 in 2014-15.
For the New York Knicks to have a successful season in 2016-17, Rose must improve the consistency with which he facilitates the offense.
Rose ranked No. 25 in the NBA in usage rate and No. 39 in assists per 48 minutes—a combination of statistics that shouldn’t exist. His assist to turnover ratio, 1.78, was No. 55 overall and No. 41 amongst point guards.
Perhaps most concerning of all, Rose created just 11.0 points via assists per game—No. 28 in the NBA and 0.2 points lower than former Bulls teammate Jimmy Butler.
The Knicks don’t need Rose to turn into Rajon Rondo, but he must create offense with more consistency. He handles the balls and finishes possessions far too often for a point guard who ranks so low in facilitating categories.
Goran Dragic averaged 5.9 assists per game and Eric Bledsoe averaged 5.5 under Jeff Hornacek in 2013-14.
Considering Rose will be playing with Brandon Jennings in 2016-17, something in the 5.5 to 6.5 range would suffice.
Realistic Expectation: 6.0 APG, 3.0 TOPG
