New York Knicks: Realistic Expectations For Derrick Rose In 2016-17
Scoring
Although he is a point guard, nothing has defined Derrick Rose’s success quite like his tremendous scoring ability. He averaged 25.0 points per game when he won MVP in 2010-11 and has been respected by the masses ever since.
The question is: after five injury-plagued seasons, what exactly can Rose be expected to provide from a scoring perspective?
Rose finished the 2015-16 season with an average of 16.4 points per game on a slash line of .427/.293/.793. He was No. 11 amongst point guards in scoring average, although his slash line is rather underwhelming.
Rose upped those numbers to 17.4 points on a slash line of .468/.375/.784 in 21 games after the 2016 All-Star Break.
It’s also worth noting that Rose wore a protective mask that blurred his vision early in the 2015-16 season. In the 48 games that followed the removal of the protective mask, he averaged 17.5 points on a slash line of .449/.320/.820 .
An average of 15-to-17 points on a slash line that hovers around .440/.320/.800 is what New York will need from Rose in 2016-17.
Realistic Expectation: 16.0 PPG, .440/.320/.800
