2. Crafting An Identity
A team without an identity generally finds itself on the outside looking in come May and June. No matter how talented the roster may be, chemistry must be developed, a goal must be established, and an identity must be crafted.
Phil Jackson made significant strides in the cultivation of both a winning culture and a team identity during the summer of 2016.
The Knicks haven’t played with a true identity in 15 years. Even during the three-year stretch from 2011 to 2013, when New York made three consecutive postseason appearances, the roster was somewhat makeshift.
Mike Woodson did an outstanding job, but it wasn’t sustainable as offensive-minded players suddenly played defense for the first time in their careers.
With a team identity, the Knicks can make a far more competent effort in free agency and the NBA Draft. Rather than offering an idea to free agents and prospects, the Knicks can provide something concrete and stable.
That alone is a major step in the right direction for an organization that’s hungry for elusive success on both the free agency scene and on the court.
