1. Stability & Continuity

As previously alluded to, Lance Thomas has the tools to be the glue guy for the New York Knicks. Thomas will have an extensive opportunity to fill that role, as Phil Jackson signed him to a four-year deal.

That four-year contract is the foundation for the No. 1 point on this list: Thomas will help provide the stability and continuity that the Knicks have been starving for.

You may not like the four-year contracts handed to Thomas, Courtney Lee, or Joakim Noah, but they were necessary. The Knicks have been plugging in new faces at shooting guard and center over the past three seasons, and that approach hasn’t worked.

If New York has any hope of becoming a championship contender, then it needs to build a roster with continuity—and that’s what those signings provide.

Carmelo Anthony, Lee, Noah, and Kristaps Porzingis all have at least two guaranteed seasons remaining on their contract. Derrick Rose and Brandon Jennings are on prove-it deals that could lead to long-term arrangements with the Knicks.

Thomas, who has been with New York since 2014-15, provides the second unit with that same continuity.

Building a contender is as much about what happens on the floor as it was what happens in the locker room, and Thomas is the glue guy who can help stabilize both.
