2. Active Offense

Easily the most intriguing aspect of Willy Hernangomez’s game is how active he remains without the ball in his hands. He’ll need to learn how to better pick his spots in the NBA, but he’s always looking to make a play offensively.

That isn’t limited to scoring, either; Hernangomez sets great screens, works well without the ball, and has soft hands on the pick-and-roll.

In other words, Hernangomez is the quintessential off-ball scoring threat at center.

Hernangomez’s jump shot isn’t much of a factor, but he does an outstanding job of controlling the interior. He’s a lethal pick-and-roll scoring threat with soft hands and the versatility to finish with both hands at—and occasionally above—the rim.

Hernangomez’s activity on the offensive glass makes him an even more significant threat as an offensive player.

Clearly, this doesn’t acknowledge how well or poorly he’ll fare as an isolation scoring threat. The reality is, New York is investing in Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis as the future of the organization, with a decision pending on Derrick Rose.

Thus, New York needs a center who can contribute without the ball in their hands—the very essence of what Hernangomez brings to the table.
