Knicks: An Interview With Graphic Artist Elliot Gerard
Do you feel there will be challenges in getting people to buy into the idea of a print magazine?
Elliot Gerard: Sure, their might be challenges, but I think people will want to see great artwork in printed and digital form. Personally, I am just excited to be a part of a magazine that’s going to represent basketball in more than just words and photographs of players. Instead, it will be an art piece/coffee table book where each story is going to have an illustration or painting representing what it is about. As an artist myself, I think that editorial pieces with illustrations make the articles read better. Your audience will picture the story in their own head, but to see it from a standpoint of another artist’s perspective of what the author is writing, I think it adds a whole new level to articles.
I think it’s becoming more and more a part of the industry, but not where it should be.
If readers can support our cause on Kickstarter—at this link: http://bit.ly/gamepointmag—that would be much appreciated, we need as much support from hoops fans everywhere!
Art clearly adds a new element to print. What do you strive to achieve when designing an graphic art piece for the Knicks?
EG: Every time I create something for the Knicks, I want it to be better than the last piece I created. That is why I have taken on creating an animated series for the team and recently creating Infographics capturing Prozingis’ rookie-year stats, and Jeff Hornacek‘s player and coaching numbers
As my relationship continues to evolve with the team I hope to start creating longer animations for them and have a more involved role with their merchandise artwork.
